Bolton School is a large, all-through independent day school set on a stunning 32-acre campus about a mile from the centre of Bolton.
The Bolton School Foundation came into existence on 1 April 1915, but its origins date back much further: to 1516 for the boys’ school, and 1877 for the girls’ school. Today Bolton School comprises a co-educational Nursery, Pre-School Class and Infant School and single-sex Junior and Senior Schools and Sixth Forms.
The School offers the best of both worlds: outstanding single-sex teaching, resulting in excellent academic results year after year, alongside opportunities for girls and boys to collaborate outside of the classroom in activities such as music, drama, outdoor learning programmes and more.
Arts, culture and creativity are embedded across the whole curriculum and the high quality of arts provision has resulted in the School achieving Platinum Artsmark status. A broad extra-curricular programme widens pupils’ interests and develops teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills, and volunteering opportunities allow pupils to engage with the local community. These activities help them to develop into well-rounded, socially responsible young people. As an Apple Distinguished School, every pupil benefits from their own iPad and staff are well-equipped to use this technology as a teaching and learning tool. The School’s Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI) seeks to research and develop an understanding of what helps children and young people learn.
The School was recently commended for its advancement of social mobility, and is dedicated to remaining inclusive: the cultural heritage of the pupil community reflects the diversity of the local region and one in five Senior School pupils receives a means-tested bursary.
Bolton School seeks to realise the potential of all pupils, with the aim that students leave equipped with the knowledge, skills and attributes that will allow them to lead a happy and fulfilled life and to make a difference for good in the wider community.
