SEND/AP Council – Co-Chairs 2023-2024

We are delighted to introduce the co-chairs of the FED SEND/AP Council between 2023-2024. Our stakeholder councils play a pivotal role in our thinking as we develop the systems and strategies that support a long-term vision and plan for education.

Nas Hussain

Nas Hussain, Executive Director, Birmingham Education Advisory Service (BEAS)

A senior leader within the field of Children Services with subject matter expertise in School Improvement, Safeguarding, Social Work, SEND & Education Law. Nas has designed and delivered front line services to meet the needs of children & young people with complex needs and multi-dimensional vulnerabilities.

She has been at the forefront of setting the strategic direction to respond to the competing demands within a number of local authorities. In particular, Nas has a refined ability to exercise sound judgement in resolving system breakdown. This skill set has enabled her to work at all levels with schools, education providers and cross sector professionals. She has championed innovative approaches that push the boundaries and secured best outcomes for children and families, many who have experienced significant challenges, including poverty and deprivation.

Nas is a member of the West Midlands ACAMH Committee and has utilised this platform for affording high quality CPD opportunities to Health, Social Care & Education professionals.

Nas has undertaken the Aspirant Director of Children’s Services Programme, the OfSTED Future Leaders Programme and the Aspirant Chief Executive Programme.

Ali Durban

Ali Durban is the co-founder of Gesher, an ambitious all-through school designed especially for children who are differently able and who learn differently. Gesher School has been awarded Ofsted Outstanding twice since opening in 2017.  

Ali is also the founder of the Gesher Assessment Centre, which offers a bespoke multi-disciplinary assessment, diagnosis and report service for children and young people who may have ADHD, Autism, or a range of varying learning differences.

Ali’s journey from exhausted SEND parent to co-founder of a thriving school community has transformed her into a ringleader for system-wide transformation. Ali sits on the Education Council for the Autism Centre of Excellence and is a member of the Lime Academy Trust.
